Glowworms and caving
Our hotel was a cute Victorian style place. WE found a place for breakfast. More NZ meat pies. It is a great breakfast. There was a fruit stand and we saw how kiwis grow. I had no idea.
We went with a tour company called Glowing adventures. A family run place and Haeth, our guide is the 4th generation to live on the land. We changed into striped thermal wool pants, tops, shorts, polar fleece and socks. We were a sight! Fitted for helmets and boots and off we went. We hiked in steams and then into the cave.
I had thought we would just keep walking, but no, we did real caving. Crawled thru small holes, up and down rocks and in and out of water. We got wet and muddy. We reached the first place where the glowworms were and turned off our headlamps. AMAZING! It was pitch dark and looked like we were looking up into the stars. It did not look real.
We were able to shower and have tea and biscuits when done. It was an incredible experience. So glad we did it. Next stop-our drive to Tongariro National Park. We arrived t our hotel and WOW! Cahteau Tongariro sits at the base of the mountains and is a big ski resort. You can see the volcanic mountain and a crate from the front. The hotel was very fancy with impeccable service. Big day tomorrow, the crossing hike.
