Snow in the mountains
Our journey took us from Arolla to Grimentz today. The weather turned out to be much better than predicted. The original plan was to take place. We rode a van from the village of Arolla where we had spent the night to the opposite valley for the start of the hike. Our driver was amazing as he navigated the sharp turns up the side of the mountain. At one point he went up backwards because there was no room to turn around. Many of us could hardly look. Sunny start to the hike up the side of the slope. The trail had many switchbacks which was a nice change from straight up as in previous hikes. About half way up, we noticed a few snow flakes. It had snowed overnight and the peaks had snow. More layers on and up we went. We hiked up the mountain in the snow fall. We reached the top to see a massive glacier, more snow covered peaks and a lake created by a dam that was a brilliant Caribbean blue. Words just can't describe. I can't wait to be able to download pictures. Of course, with my raging cold, I was last to reach the summit, but still did it in under the usual time. We then hiked down to a smaller lake for lunch and then it was a pleasant hike to the dam. It got very windy for awhile, but our rain gear kept everyone warm. Our reward was a hot drink and the van came to take us to Grimentz. This is a very old alpine village started in around 1050. There still remain many of the old buildings. Our dinner was the most amazing thing I had ever seen. In this little village, the presentation of our meals brought " wow" to everyone. I have never seen such elaborate and creative plating. It was a work of art as well as delicious. I had quail with honey, Marty had beef stroganoff, but not like anything we are familiar with. The desserts also were a sight to enjoy. I just hope whatever ailment I have going on goes away quickly. I need a good rest for tomorrow's hike. We are suppose to do a trail that involves waterfalls, again weather permitting.
