Basel- part 2 Sept. 3 ,2015
Luzern was cloudy and drizzly once we returned from the Glasi. We checked the weather in Basel and it was partly sunny, no rain and about 10 degrees warmer. Hopped a train and it took an hour to get to this town which borders France and Germany. Many historic building and market places.
We discovered the town hall and roamed around inside.
We continued our walk all around town and rest along the Rhine river. Everyone was outside, sitting on the steps.
A small building with an iron gate is in the center of the bridge. It is covered with locks. Don't know the whole story about that just yet, but will investigate. I had read n Trip Advisor that there was a ferry boat to take you across the river to the Basel Munster Cathedral. This ferry is run just like it has for probably hundreds of years. A large cable runs across the river and the boat has a cable line that attaches to it. The river current and the rudder brings the boat back and forth. A single captain mans the vessel. We then climbed up the stairs to the cathedral. Great views. For 5 CHF, you can climb all the way to the top of the spires. It was amazing. You can see for miles. Not for anyone afraid of heights or tight spaces. The stair ways were steep, some spiral and most very dark. Loved every minute.
We ended our day with authentic Swiss dinner for Marty's birthday at the Braunen Mutz which has been there for 100 years.
