Nuremberg- walled city

A regional train ride today took us to Nuremberg. A Bayern ticket is offered for only $26 for one person and $5 extra for companions up to 5 people. It is a round-trip ticket that lets your take a regional train anywhere in Bavaria from 9:00 am to 3:00pm the next day. Quite the deal. We reached Nuremberg around 10:50am. It is a walled city and very impressive. Nuremberg was first recorded in 1050 AD. After the war, the city decided to rebuild in the original style.

We entered the city and went to the Handcrafted Market. True artists and beautiful handcrafted goods. We bought a salt and pepper set. We walked down the Main Street to the pedestrian area. Food stands lined the street. We visited St. Lorenz Church. Many of the church artifacts, stained class windows and artwork had been removed in preparation of the war. The church is like a mini art museum with several masterpieces are on display. Works dating from the 14th century are throughout the church. There is a carved wood piece called “The Tabernacle”. Unbelievable detail in the carvings. The artist even put himself in the carving at the bottom- holding it up. Truly remarkable. We were in awe of all the art and the beauty in this church.

We continued walking and we found ourselves in the middle of the Christmas market. Some Nuremberg sausages and a macaroon made a good snack.

We saw the Frauenkirche (Church of our Lady) but did not go inside because they had a stage set-up outside and various musical entertainers performed.

We did tour St. Sebald Church. Another ornate, beautiful church.

Up the hill towards the Kaiserburg- the Imperial Castle. We walked around the wall. Had great 360 views of Nuremberg. They are doing major restoration, so we could not see all of it. We were told the inside was similar to what we saw the day before, so we passed on that.

Next to the castle was a pub where we grabbed lunch and warmed up.
We continued on our walking tour, following the river and viewing the many bridges in town.

It was getting dark, so we looked at the lights, listened to a brass quartet and then back to the train for our almost 2 hour ride back.
