Castles and a palace
Today was castle day. We hooked up with a tour through Mike’s Bike tours that do the castle thing in the winter. There were 24 of us, so not too big a group. We left Munich at 9am on a luxury bus. Beautiful drive in the country and a brief Autobahn experience. We stopped at Linderhof Palace- the home of Ludwig II. He built many palaces, but this is the only one he finished. The Linderhof Palace is probably the most lavish places I have ever seen. Ornate gold everywhere. Fancy baroque design and over the top in luxury of the time. Ludwig was obsessed with French design and copied that. There are also gardens and fountains, but they were all winterized, so I took a picture of a postcard so you can see what it looks like in the summer.
We then stopped By the famous village of Oberammergau. It is famous for their Passion Play they do once every 10 years. The village also have many painted building. Grabbed some food and purchased an ornament from the famous Kathe Wolfarht gallery.
It was on to the legendary Neuschwanstein Castle. Before we started our steep 20 minute hike up the mountain, we could view the Schloss Hohenschwangau Castle that was perched on the hill above the village. The Neuschwanstein Castle was striking. A fairytale castle for sure. We first walked past the castle to get views form different sides as well as views of the Alps and lake. Further up the road was a place where you could photograph the castle, the bridge and the gorge. Unfortunately, the bridge was closed so we could not get that million dollar view, but the views we had were amazing. 30 minute tour inside and just like the Linderhof Palace, the areas that Ludwig did finish were as lavish as the others. Bus ride back to Munich.
A quick stop at the famous Hofbrau House and called it a day.
