A day at Versailles
Took the C train to Versailles today. It is the largest palace in Europe and it is magnificent. The Palace of Versailles was the principal royal residence of France from 1682, under Louis XIV, until the start of the French Revolution in 1789, under Louis XVI. At one time, 10,000 people lived and worked at the palace. The grounds are composed of the Palace, the gardens, the Park, the Trianon estate and several buildings in town, today the Estate of Versailles spreads over more than 800 hectares. We first toured the palace. Once again, lots of gold, formal scroll work, and over-the -top furnishing, but all in the style of the day. I don't know how you could relax. Again- oh, the magnificent ceilings!!!
The gardens, the Park, the Trianon estate take up acres and acres. You get a nice overview once you exit the palace. Lovely formal gardens, fountains, and statues are everywhere. Again, not too much to see and the fountains were off due to the time of year, but you can get the idea of the grand scale of what this might look like during peak season.
A nice train ride back to our apartment. Tomorrow is our last day in Paris.
