The GGCE- Day 3
A slightly later start this morning. Pancakes and bacon for breakfast. We were all a bit tired due to the heat and blowing sand all night. On the water by 7:30am.
We were all dressed in our full rain gear because we were headed to Granite Gorge and lots of rapids today. We hit a large rapid almost immediately. We went through our first 10 rated rapid and several 7 & 8's. They were the biggest rapids we have ever experienced and it was scary as you held on for dear life. Hance Rapid was the big rapid of the day. Marty decided to sit in the front seat today. He was soaked, but everyone got wet. We had a nice lunch stop at a beach inlet next to some very fast water.
As we entered the gorge, new rock was exposed. Vishnu Schist is a black rock said to be 1.8 billion years old. There were areas of the rock that had cracked due to shifting faults and granite oozed through those cracks making pink and black striped rock.
We passed under the bridges for the Bright Angel Trail and Phantom Ranch.
Our camp for the night was Granite (mile 94). Jake said it was one of the best. It is a first come, first serve basis, so you stop before others take it. We hung out in the rafts because another group was there, but we soon discovered that they were only there for a quick stop. Suddenly Riley says, "Oh, it is the nudist group". She was correct. The entire raft, men and women had nothing on but life jackets, hats and sandals. The parents of the teens were worried about what they may be seeing. We could not understand why they would want to be out in the hot sun all day without covering up. Riley just shook her head and said, "Only in the Grand Canyon". It was a beautiful campsite right next to the Granite Fall Rapids. There are only two sets of rapids that are called "falls". Granite Falls and Lava Falls which we will do on our last full day. First thing in the morning- a wild ride. This campsite had lots of room, a small inlet for swimming and bathing. Spaghetti, salad and garlic bread for dinner with chocolate and coconut cake. A beautiful night to gaze at the stars and fall asleep to the sound of the rapids.
