The GGCE- Day 5
Another early morning as usual. Marty and I are getting very quick at setting up and taking down our cots. Some mornings as we are getting things loaded and ready to go, Riley read us a story or peom written by rafters long ago. Loved all the stories. We didn't have far to go before our first stop at Blacktail Canyon. (mile 120.5) We stopped here for two reasons. One, we were hoping to get Jillian (one of the teens) to play her ukulele and sing in the canyon. It has great acoustics. Second, it is the area of the Great Unconformity- a billion year gap in geologic history. Fascinating!!! You felt very small inside this canyon with the walls towering toward the sky.

We hit several more rapids. It was hot. The spray and splash were helping us keep cool. More striped stone walls as we travels. We saw more Big Horn Sheep on the rivers edge.

As we travel, more of the Schist rock appeared. This time it was very black and almost shiny due to geologic changes. It became a type of Basalt.

We made another stop at Stone Creek- mile 132.5. Here we hiked back to a nice waterfall. Everyone took turns getting wet. It didn't take long to dry off in this heat in the canyon. You could be soaking wet and totally dry in about 10-15 minutes. Whenever we stopped, we took off our lifejackets, shirts or whatever we did not need for the short hike. Sometimes our rafts looked like a laundry heap.

We entered a narrow section of the canyon. More black rock and hanging gardens and sheep. It is amazing how much life a small trickle or seepage of water can support.

Deer Creek Falls was our next stop at mile 137. You could see the high falls from the river. A short walk through the shrubs and we were there. The water was coming down with such force it created wind. You sould stand off to the side and be lightly misted. It felt wonderful. We hung around for awhile until everyone had suffiently cooled off. Marty held out his bandana to show how strong the wind was from the falling water. It was a beautiful falls.

After going through a set of rapids, we pulled over to our campsite called the OC's. A great site and in total shade when we arrived. Make your own fajitas was our dinner.
