Maligne Canyon
Maligne Canyon is one if the deepest and narrow canyons in the Rockies. 164 foot drops with narrow twists and turns. Rushing glacial water has carved the canyon. The moist surroundings allows mosses and lichens to grow, covering the rocks. Some areas look like a fairy forest. We hiked along the canyon edges as we gazed down the steep chutes. The roar of the water filled the air. The trail Criss-crosses the river with a series of bridges. We crossed all five bridges and soaked in the beautiful scenery. A lovely ride thru the mountains brought us to the Miette Hot Springs. The water is now in a pool- like center and people soak in the open-air arena. There is a small fee per person and they even rent towels and bathing suits if you came unprepared. Our plan was to complete a hike past the springs and then take a soak. We reached the original hot springs center and saw the hot, mineral-rich water emerge from the side of the mountain. As we started to ascend higher, it began to rain lightly. We got the rain gear on and decided to head back. We reached the parking lot and it was pouring. The hot spring soak was scrapped. Back to our cabin to get ready for Marty's birthday dinner. Braised bison short ribs and smoked duck breast dinners were amazing.
