Canadian Rockies

We are off to explore the Canadian Rockies. Jasper and Banff will be our two base towns. We will arrive in Calgary and head north, up the Icefields Parkway to Jasper. Besides our usual hikes, we will take a day to walk on and explore the largest active glacier in North America; take a scenic boat ride down Maligne Lake to Spirit Island. Hopefully, there will be wildlife sightings and I know the scenery will be spectacular. I will try to post when I can, but I know the first week the Internet connection will be spotty. Please be patient and thank you for following along.

The Drive
Our drive to Jasper had amazing views in all directions. We ventured off the main highway and took a more scenic route that lead us to Johnson's Canyon. We hiked on trails and catwalks along the canyon walls. The rushing ice blue glacial water roared by. The canyon had several waterfalls. After reaching the final upper falls, we continued to the Inkpots- small pools that are filled by underground springs. You can see the water bubble thru the sand and minreal deposits, creating large circles on the bottom. The pools were various shades of blues and greens. We had lunch at a canyon-side cafe before heading north. We passed the Columbia Icefields and huge rocky peaks. The rivers rushed thru the valleys -again in the beautiful light blue color of mineral rich water. There were a few sprinkles and you could see that it was snowing in the highest elevations. We reached Jasper, checked-in to our cute cabin, visited the local grocery store, then off to the Jasper Brewing Company for a bite.
Tomorrow's activities are weather dependent. A storm is brewing. Will try to get some pictures posted  when internet connection improves.
