Aran Island- Inis Mor- Day 4

Today’s adventure was a ferry to the Aran Island- Inis Mor. When we boarded the ferry it was very cloudy and very windy. The ride was about 45 minutes and the sun started to come out as we reached the island. We must be in good favor of the travel gods because today’s forecast was not a good one at all. So there we were- bright and sunny. Upon exiting the ferry, we met Thomas; a local man that was born and raised on the island. We hopped in his van for an island tour. First stop was Dun Aonghasa Fort. The most spectacular semi Circular Celtic Stone fort in Europe. First constructed in 1100 BC and refortified in 700-800 AD. It sits over 300 feet above the cliffs. Amazing that these rocks are still in these formations after all this time.We hiked up the hill to see the fort, roamed around and then hiked back down. We had some time to spend in the small village of Kilmurvy.

Dianna and I had a very unique opportunity today on the Aran Island Inis Mor. We met a shop keeper while looking at yarn. Dianna first saw the sign and began to knit- adding to the “whole world scarf”. We talked with the woman at the shop and I told her I did not knit but I did crochet. She asked me if I would start a crocheted scarf because many other visitors have told her that is what they do. I went to work and started the first “Whole world crochet scarf”. When we were finished with a few inches, we wrote our names, date, where we were from and a blessing. So cool.

Next stop was the Seven Churches. The remains churches from the late 15th century.

Thomas then drove us around to the other ends of the island, talking about life on the island. 800 people reside on the island. We drove by his house and he informed us that there are over 7000 stone walls.

A little bit of time in the town of Kilronan, then the ferry back. Tomorrow we leave Galway and head north.
